Hi folks,
As some of you may remember I'm doing an Iowa-class conversion to a BBGN with helicopter assault ship capabilities. Now I've completed the hanger, which is massive, and I'm currently designing the flight deck but I have a question I thought I'd pose to you. I have two possibikties here, and I'd like your thoughts on the matter.
1. Flight deck extending all the way from the aft of the turret ring of former x-ray turret all the way back to the very aft of the ship. This has the advantage of having a very large flight deck, but leaves the aft of the ship weapon-less.
2. Flight deck extends from the aft of turret ring of former x-ray turret but stops short of the end of the ship, leaving room for a single 5/54 gun to be installed. This gives the ship firepower to defend the aft of the ship, but restricts the flight deck space and could significantly reduce the capability to operate heavy-liff helo's and V/STOL jets.
Each has advantages and disadvantages. I know most modern ships don't have weapons like the 5/54 at the aft of the ship, but then we're talking DDG's and FFH/FFG's which are a LOT more agile than a BBGN. On the other hand, the BBGN is extremely well armoured, and probably wouldn't operate by itself, but even if it did it probably still wouldn't be a problem.
Thoughts?
